Lawn Bowling History

According to www.bowlscanada.com, the official website of Bowls Canada Boulingrin, “there is a positive recorded history of bowls having been played in England as far back as the 12 th century, and it could have been played much earlier than that.” Although not quite as far back, we have been playing the game of bowls at the OTLBC since the middle of the 20th century.

Bowls may be played on manicured greens, artificial surfaces or mats. At the OTLBC we play on two crisp natural greens. Bowls in Canada has some likeness to curling. The object of the game is to roll the bowl (not completely spherical) as close to the white jack as possible. The jack is rolled the length of the green to start each end. Where it stops, after being centered in the middle of the rink, becomes the target for the balance of the end. The game of bowls involves offensive and defensive strategy, and has the added twist that the jack is movable and can be ousted anywhere on the rink by a delivered bowl.
